Password Management and Policy

Secure passwords are important to keep users safe

Passwords serve as the primary gatekeeper for your digital identity, and at Scribo, they ensure that student data, teacher feedback, and classroom transcripts remain confidential and secure.

Most teacher and student users log into Scribo using Google or Microsoft SSO. This means there is no 'password' stored in Scribo - we use the permission granted to us by their Google or Microsoft linked account. When students and teachers DO NOT use Google or Microsoft, students can be granted a Username for Scribo, teachers MUST have a valid email account .

Each Student and Teacher ( non SSO) User account in Scribo must have a 14 Character password.

Below is a guide on managing User passwords in Scribo.

Why a 14-Character Password Matters

The length of a password is the most significant factor in its strength. While short passwords can be cracked in seconds using "brute-force" attacks (where a computer tries every possible combination), every additional character increases the difficulty exponentially.

  • Security: A 14-character password creates trillions of possible combinations, making it nearly impossible for unauthorized users to guess.

  • Privacy: For students and teachers, this protects the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)—a private space where a student's mistakes are used for growth, not public judgment.

  • Account Integrity: It ensures that your grading, assessment, and personalized insights are not altered or accessed by anyone else.

How to Construct a Strong 14-Character Password

To meet Scribo's requirements while keeping the password memorable, you can use the "Passphrase" or "Code Word" method.

1. The Passphrase Method (Easiest to Remember)

Combine three or four unrelated words and swap letters for special characters.

  • Step 1: Pick three words: Kiwi, Rocket, Blue

  • Step 2: Add a special character and a number: Kiwi!Rocket22Blue

  • Step 3: Adjust for caps: Kiwi!Rocket22Blue (This is 16 characters—well over the limit!)

2. The Sentence Method

Think of a sentence that is easy for you to remember and use the first letter of every word.

  • Sentence: "I want to be a great writer in New Zealand!"

  • Conversion: Iw2baGw!iNZ2026

    • I (I) w (want) 2 (to) b (be) a (a) G (great) w (writer) ! (!) i (in) N (New) Z (Zealand) 2026 (Year)

  • Final Length: 14 characters, including caps and special characters.

Pro-Tips for Students & Teachers

  • Avoid Personal Info: Don't use your name, school name, or birthday.

  • Use a Formula: Pick a favorite book or movie quote and apply the "Sentence Method."

  • Don't Share: Your password is your "digital signature"—keep it private to protect your work.
