What is Sellpy's footprint?

Here you can read more about how we calculate our footprint

What do we mean by our footprint?

Our footprint refers to all the greenhouse gas emissions calculated in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents that are generated as a result of Sellpy's operations. But a total of emissions can be difficult to relate to and even more difficult to put into perspective. That’s why we have chosen to break down our carbon dioxide emissions into footprint per item. The idea is that you should be able to get a picture of Sellpy's emissions from reselling an item compared to the emissions from manufacturing a new, equivalent item.

What is included in our calculations?

Our footprint is made up of data collected both from our own operations and those of our partners during 2022. It includes a variety of goods and services such as energy consumption for warehouses and offices, manufacturing of packaging materials, internal transport, pickups and deliveries, waste management, business travel, employee commuting and data services.

How are the footprints calculated?

To calculate the total footprint, we multiply the collected data with specific emission factors. This allows us to obtain the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions are divided into two categories depending on when they occur. The first category is the processing footprint and includes pickup, sorting, photography and storage. The second category is fulfilment footprint and includes packaging for orders and shipping partners' emissions for delivery to the buyer. When the categorisation is complete, the total emissions are divided by the number of items affected. This way, we obtain a footprint per item for each item category.

The properties of each individual item are in some cases of great importance. When we calculate emissions from transport for example, we take into account the weight of the item and how far it has been transported. In some calculations, we also take into account the number of items, like when we calculate emissions from producing Sellpy bags. In other cases, such as energy consumption in a warehouse, we do not include the properties of items in the calculations.

What is not included in our footprint?

We feel confident knowing that the majority of emission sources are included in our calculation. However, there is room for improvement, both in terms of collecting more data, replacing emission factors and identifying more emission sources. For example, we do not have all the data needed to calculate emissions from use and end-of-life management of sold items. We also know that we need better data from certain suppliers and better emission factors regarding waste management. We will therefore continue our work on improving the calculation of our climate footprint.
