Autofilling Carrier Portals with Sidecar

Copy insured data from any website or document and let Sembley Sidecar autofill the carrier portal you're working on.

Written by Jeremy Peskin

Sembley Sidecar is a Chrome extension that helps you fill out carrier portals using insured information you already have. Copy the data from any website or document, then let Sidecar autofill the carrier portal you're working on.

You stay in control the whole time: you review every answer before submitting, and Sidecar never submits anything for you.

Before you start

  • Use Google Chrome. Sidecar is a Chrome extension, so it runs in Chrome on your computer.

  • Install Sidecar from the Chrome Web Store and pin it (click the extensions icon and then the pin icon next Sidecar)

  • Sign in with your Sembley account.

  • Make sure your plan includes Sidecar — it requires a Pro plan. If it doesn't, you'll see "Sidecar isn't included in your current plan. Upgrade to Pro to copy insured data and autofill carrier forms."

Copy insured data from a website or portal

Sidecar reads the page you have open — a carrier portal, your management system, your email inbox or any other website — and pulls the insured's information out of it.

  • Open the page that shows the insured's information in a Chrome tab and keep that tab active.

  • Open the Sidecar panel and click Copy from this page.

  • The first time you use Sidecar on a site, Chrome asks you to allow Sidecar access to that site. Allow it once and Sidecar won't ask again; if you decline, Sidecar leaves the site alone and asks again next time.

  • Sidecar reads the page and adds what it finds to the Insured data pane, then tells you how many values it copied. If it doesn't find insured data on the page, it says so and nothing is added.

  • Copy from as many pages and sites as you need — each copy builds on what's already in the pane instead of replacing it.

  • If the open page is an insured's record in Sembley, Sidecar copies that profile straight from your Sembley account instead of reading the page. You can also load an insured's data anytime from the Select an Insured search at the top of the panel.

Upload and scan documents

If the insured's information lives in files rather than on a web page, upload the documents and let Sidecar scan them.

  1. Click the icon next to Copy from this page and choose Upload and Scan Documents.

  2. Choose up to 5 documents at a time — PDF, image, Word, text, CSV, HTML, RTF, or XML. Each document can be up to 10 MB, up to 20 MB in total.

  3. Sidecar reads the documents and adds the insured data it finds to the Insured data pane.

Websites and documents work together: copy from a portal, then add a document — everything lands in the same record.

Review the copied data

Everything Sidecar copies lands in the Insured data pane, with an icon next to each value showing where it came from. Before autofilling, make the record your own:

  • Click any value to edit it, or click Add field to type one in yourself.

  • For lists like drivers or vehicles, uncheck a row to leave it out, and drag rows into the order the portal expects.

  • To start over, open the ⋯ menu at the top of the panel and choose Clear copied data.

  • To keep the data in Sembley, choose the insured under Select an Insured and click Save to Sembley — or click Save as new insured to create a new insured from what you copied.

Autofill a carrier portal

  1. Open the carrier portal in a Chrome tab and keep that tab active.

  2. Open the Sidecar panel by clicking the Sidecar icon in the Chrome toolbar, or by right-clicking the page.

  3. Choose the insured data you want to use — it's loaded from your Sembley account.

  4. Click Autofill this page. Sidecar starts working through the form, field by field.

While Sidecar works

  • Keep the carrier portal tab active and the Sidecar panel open until the run ends.

  • Chrome shows a banner saying the browser is being debugged while Sidecar runs. This is expected — it's how Sidecar sees and fills the page — and the banner disappears when the run ends.

  • You may see a dialog asking "Let Autofill pause other extensions?" This usually means a password manager or another extension is blocking the connection. You can allow it or decline.

  • The panel shows a live feed of each step Sidecar takes, with a short explanation for every action.

  • Click Stop at any time to end the run.

  • A run ends when Sidecar finishes or can't continue. It also stops automatically if the page navigates away.

Review and submit

Sidecar never submits the form. When the run ends, review every answer on the page and submit it yourself when it's ready.

  • Sidecar only enters information from the insured data you selected

  • Any fields Sidecar couldn't resolve are listed by name in the final summary, so you know exactly what to fill in yourself.

  • By default, Sidecar replaces values already filled in on the page. To keep what's already there, uncheck "When autofilling, replace values already in the portal" under the Autofill button.

  • Sidecar never clicks submit buttons, navigates away, makes payments, binds coverage, or grants consent.

Good to know

  • Sidecar fills the main page only — it can't fill content inside embedded frames.

  • Sidecar never fills password fields, file-upload fields, or hidden fields.

  • You can be signed in on one browser at a time.

  • After a run, you can rate how it went. Your feedback helps us make Sidecar better.

  • Raw page captures and AI outputs are deleted after 30 days.
