There may be times where you find one of your pages is ranking for a keyword, despite thinking this keyword is better suited to a different page. There are a few steps you can take to solve this problem.
How to work out if your keyword isn’t ranking on the most suitable page:
Head to your keyword sitemap and look for the broken red link icon next to the keyword. This icon means that the keyword is ranking on a different page to the page it’s currently assigned to.
You may have a ‘Google is Getting Confused’ action telling you that 2 of your pages are competing for the same keyword.
How to decide which of the pages is best for the keyword:
Step 1:
Hover over the keyword and take a look at the position that it’s ranking in.
If it’s already ranking on the first page in Google (top 10 positions), then Google clearly thinks that this keyword is very relevant to its assigned page! Therefore, we’d recommend leaving it here.
Step 2:
If it’s in position 11 or below, you’ll want to take a further look.
Go to reporting, then to keywords.
Click on the eye icon next to the keyword in question.
Here, you’ll be able to see the top 10 competitors for this keyword. These are the top 10 websites that come up when you search for this keyword in Google.
When you take a look at the top 10 competitors, what kind of pages are coming up?
Which of your pages are these pages most similar to?
You’ll want to optimise this keyword on the page that is most similar to the other pages in the top 10 competitors.
