Often, Google may get confused between two different pages on your website. The reason this is an issue, is because something called ‘cannibalisation’ can occur.

Cannibalisation is when two of your pages are competing against each other for the same keyword. It means that neither of your pages will be able to rank as high in Google as one of your pages could.

Therefore, cannibalisation can negatively impact your SEO.

How to complete the action ‘Google is getting confused’?

There are a few steps you can take to complete this action, allowing you to stop cannibalisation from occurring on your website!

Step 1: Decide which page you want to rank for the keyword.

Which page would be most suitable for this keyword? It could be worth Googling the keyword to see what type of pages Google brings up. This will give a good indication of which of your pages is most suitable.

Step 2: Look at the metadata.

Once you know which page you’d like to rank, take a look at the metadata (this is the title tag, H1 heading and meta description).

What to do:

Make sure the keyword is included in the metadata of the page you want to rank. For the page you don’t want ranking, try to remove all mentions of the keyword within the metadata and replace it with a more suitable keyword.

Step 3: Look at the copy on the website.

Page copy includes all of the text that you see on the page.

What to do:

As with the metadata, you want to ensure that the page you want ranking has the keyword included within the copy.

Step 4: Add internal links.

Another great way to avoid cannibalisation is by creating internal links that point to the page you would like to rank.

What to do:

On the page you don’t want ranking for the keyword, you'll want to find where the keyword is mentioned within the text. Rather than getting rid of it, you can create an internal link to the other page and use the keyword as anchor text. This will alert Google of which page is most relevant for the keyword.
