If you are less than 18 years old, you must apply for a learner's permit.

If you are 18+ years old, you do not need to receive a driving permit in order to take the exam. However, if you choose to get a driving permit for driving practice, you will need to hold it for at least 30 days before applying for a license.

Students must be at least 15½ years old and active in driver’s education to apply for a permit. If an individual has already turned 16, a driver’s education course is not required to apply for a permit.
