Mailchimp and GDPR
When a person subscribes to Mailchimp we make the assumption that they did so willingly and gave their consent to do so. (Note GDPR doesn't apply to organisation contacts)
A consent record is added to the person in Sheep with a source
of Mailchimp
. You may collect other consent records and use other legal basis in addition to this automatic consent record. If the person has opted in to interests or groups these will also generate consent records in Sheep.
(From the person page click the 'privacy' sidebar to see all GDPR privacy records)
If a person unsubscribes from a list in Sheep then the automatic consent record is withdrawn.
Extra fields in Mailchimp
Sheep provides extra fields to Mailchimp. Turn on these fields so that you can see them in your list:
Navigate to Lists (top menu in Mailchimp)
Select the lists
'Manage contacts' is usually the default sections shown
Click Toggle Columns to show/hide the extra Sheep fields
Dynamic Segments
Navigate to the list view in Mailchimp
click 'Create A Segment'
Add any other filters that you would normally use
Add a Tags filter and pick the appropriate Sheep GDPR tag (don't use Sheep GDPR - see below)
Fields in Mailchimp (⚠️ don't use Sheep GDPR)
The original GDPR system for Sheep and Mailchimp used a field called "Sheep GDPR". This field is limited in length to 256 character. This field is sufficiently long for nearly all clients but if your GDPR names are long then the data is cut off. The field is still populated for the many clients that have never hit this limit. However we strongly recommend moving your segment rules to the general purpose Tags field. Sheep GDPR data is prefixed by "S:GDPR:" in the list of tags.
Bypassing GDPR
You can subscribe people directly to Mailchimp using the Mailchimp interface or through the Mailchimp tab on a SheepCRM contact. This will make the contact available for Campaigns but any filters setup (see previous section) won't include this contact.
