Here's our guide for setting up and printing your prescription labels.

Prescription Labels

Default Rx Label

The default label is formatted for two different label sizes. If you are using the default label template, you will select the correct label size for your clinic under Admin > Clinic Settings > Settings > General.

Note: For a mailing label, the label size should be 1.1250" x 3.5" (1 1/8 x 3 1/2)

Custom Rx Label (Beta - COMING SOON)

Note: Our custom labels are in beta as of April 2024. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or if you are running into any issues!

If you would like additional or different information to populate on the Rx label, you can create a custom label under Admin > Clinic Settings > Settings > Rx Label Templates.

When you are creating a custom label, you will first enter the label size you will be using under "Label Settings".

Once you have the correct label size, you will then use the "Available Variables" to populate the information you want to print on the label. Once you select a variable, you will be able to format the label by "dragging" the variables around where you want them to print. Variables such as {Patient Name} and {Prescription Name & Dose} will automatically fill in the details according to each patient and medication.

You may also add custom text by overriding a variable field and typing in whatever information you want to populate.

In addition to the layout and what data will populate on the label, you can format the text by changing the font size, making a line bold, etc.

TIP: custom fields help with varying state requirements.

Hardware & Software

In order to print your prescription labels correctly, you’ll need to make sure your printer is set up to a computer correctly. Shepherd does not connect directly to any printers for additional settings.

Setting Up a DYMO Printer

Step 1: Install the Driver

After determining which driver will work for your operating system and printer, select the link to download it. After it downloads, you’ll need to open the driver installation file and make sure it’s successfully installed on your computer.

Step 2: Hook Up the Printer

Unless you’re using a wireless printer, you need to make sure that the printer is:

  • Connected to the computer you’re using

  • Turned on

Step 3: Add the Printer

Before printing, you’ll need to add the printer as a destination. The process is different for computers running MacOS and Windows.

NOTE: If you just added the printer to your computer or network, it may not appear on the list of print destinations until you search for and select it.

DYMO Printing Settings

Once the printer is selected, you’ll need to make some quick adjustments before printing.

  1. Select More Settings

  2. Set Layout to Landscape

  3. Select 30258 Diskette as the paper size

    1. Note: Due to a recent update of Chrome, some users may not see the expected paper sizes. If you do not see '30258 Diskette', look for "custom 54.02x69.85mm" or "2.127 x 2.75" until this issue between Dymo and Chrome is resolved.

  4. Set Margins to None

  5. Set Scale to Default

  6. Ensure that the checkboxes for 'Headers and footers' and 'Background graphics' are NOT checked

  7. Select ‘Print
