Editorial content can be used to illustrate newsworthy and current events. It can also be used to illustrate subjects of human interest, including the arts, business, culture, health and fitness, lifestyle, social events, technology, and travel. Shutterstock classifies editorial content into three categories:
Documentary Editorial Content: Content that documents actual real-life events as a factual record. For example, a photo of a parade or the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Illustrative Editorial Content: Content that illustrates a subject of human interest through staging. For example, a product shot of a popular household appliance or a staged image of a person drinking a beverage from a recognizable brand.
Editorial Illustrations, Vectors and Animations: Illustrations, vectors, and animations that illustrate newsworthy events, current events, and subjects of human interest. For example, an illustration of a well-known building.
To submit editorial content, do the following when preparing a submission for review:
Ensure the submission’s description/title, keywords, categories, and location information complies with Shutterstock’s metadata requirements.
Format descriptions/titles for documentary editorial like this: CITY, STATE/COUNTRY – MONTH DAY, YEAR: Factual sentence that describes the content’s subject matter.
If submitting content from an event, especially one that requires credentials, be sure to include the name of the event in the title. You can learn more about our credentials requirements here.
Ensure the content complies with Shutterstock’s Intellectual Property and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) standards.
Select the “Editorial” button under the “Usage” section.
When content designated as “Editorial” is approved, it is labeled as “Editorial Use Only” on Shutterstock.com and cannot be used to advertise or promote a product or service.
