An attribute is a representation of a piece of data on your people. It could be something like a phone number, an email address, or a favorite color. Creating a new attribute means that you're telling Sift to expect a certain piece of data from one of your Directories/Sources or that you would like to have your users enter a piece of data on their profile pages. After creating an attribute, you may add it to your profile pages and/or reference it inside of a data mapping.
Let’s learn how to create your own Attributes below.
Step 2: Go to the Person Profiles section, then click the "Attributes" tab
To create a new Attribute, click the New Attribute button at the top right.
Step 3: Choose an attribute type
You will be given a list of attribute types to choose from. Based on the type of attribute you choose to create, the edit experience and the types of values your employees will be allowed to enter on the profile page will differ.
You may also want to create an attribute for the purpose of mapping to it from a data source. In this case, you should lean towards picking the simpler type of attribute vs. the more complex one, as the editing experience will not be relevant. For example, the "Short Text" and "Select" attribute types both end up producing the same type of value, so "Short Text" should be preferred if you don't plan for the value to be editable on profiles.
Step 4: Configure your attribute
Next, we give you some additional options to configure your attribute. Some of these options are only available for certain attribute types. Here you can:
Update the attribute's name and description to change how it is described to your end users
Add the attribute to your directory filters or Org Chart highlighting
Change editing validation options like select options, max chip collection length, or preset autocomplete lists
Disable the attribute to make it invisible in Sift
Step 4: Where do I go next?
Now that you've created your attribute, you may:
What else can I do with attributes?
To update an existing attribute, click on the row in the table. You will be provided with options in the form to configure the attribute based on its type. Some attributes are created by Sift and may not be modified. Their rows will not be clickable.
To delete an attribute, scroll down to the bottom of the page in the edit view. We recommend in most cases to instead disable the attribute, as data (on profiles, mappings, configuration) will be preserved.
