Why would I use SIMTICS with an LMS?

LMS stands for "Learning Management System" and is the system that schools and other organizations use to manage learners' activities, assignments, grades, and their access to third party online resources.

There are many different brands of LMS products; these are the most common ones:

  • Canvas

  • Moodle

  • Blackboard

  • D2L Brightspace

  • Schoology

Your school may have something different from the ones listed above, but they all fundamentally work the same way.

SIMTICS has the ability to integrate directly into these LMS products using an integration standard called "LTI". This allows students to use SSO (Single Sign-On) to access SIMTICS modules directly when they are logged into their school's LMS, without needing to log in separately to the SIMTICS site. Once they complete a module, a score will be sent back automatically and will reflect in their LMS grade book.

LMS integration is a one-time setup and can save you a lot of time and hassle as users no longer need separate login information for SIMTICS, and scores automatically populate in your LMS grade book without you having to upload them separately.

Here are a few LMS integration keywords and what they mean...

Consumer & Secret keys

These keys are unique codes supplied by us for your LMS administrator to insert into the LMS. These unique keys ensure that the SIMTICS server knows that your school is authorized to access SIMTICS, which school you and your users are from, where your data is stored in the database, and which modules you have purchased or have access to.

Tool URL

This is the special LTI link that your LMS will use to access SIMTICS. You'll notice it's different from the regular SIMTICS URL, as it links directly to the LTI system.

Custom Parameters

These allow you to customize the learner's experience and/or choose what SIMTICS score is passed back to the LMS grade book. For instance, by using custom parameters for an assignment, you could choose to send back a quiz score instead of a Test Mode simulation score.
NOTE: Canvas is the only LMS currently that handles customization differently: it does not use "custom parameters" but rather allows you to select the different customization options using checkboxes.
