What does EPSG stand for?
EPSG stands for European Petroleum Survey Group. It was an organization that compiled a database of coordinate reference systems and coordinate transformations.
EPSG codes are unique identifiers for these systems and transformations. In geometry, EPSG codes are commonly used to specify the coordinate reference system (CRS) for geographic data, such as points, lines, and polygons.
Why is the EPSG important?
The EPSG code that the Site/Operation is created in will be used during the processing of the drone data. This means the deliverables for the product purchased will be created in the EPSG of the Site/Operation.
Therefore it is important that the Site/Operation is created in the correct EPSG before data processing commences. The EPSG selected should be suitable for the desired use of the deliverables.
For example if a Solar Construction Monitoring or Topography operation has been carried out and the deliverables wish to be used in a CAD or GIS package to compare to a customer's own drawings, then the coordinate reference system of the deliverables downloaded from the Sitemark Platform and your own drawings must be the same.
If your Site/Operation is created in the default EPSG:4326 (which refers to the WGS 84 geographic coordinate system, which is commonly used with latitude and longitude coordinates) and your own drawings are in a more local EPSG (e.g. EPSG:25832 - ETRS89 / UTM zone 32N) then the two drawings will not overlay with each other.
In this scenario you should create your Site/Operation in EPSG:25832 and then you will be able to compare with your own datasets.
Can I use Any EPSG For My Site?
Apart from those that have global coverage, like EPSG:4326 - WGS 84, then the answer is no. All EPSGs have a defined extent. The extent for an EPSG can vary from global coverage to small regional level.
For example the commonly used EPSG for Belgium is EPSG:31370 which covers the geographical area covered by the purple shaded box in the image below.
If your Site/Operation is outside of this area, then you cannot use this EPSG. As a consequence we cannot process operations to EPSGs if the EPSG does not cover the geographical extents of where the Site/Operation is.
