Fill in Blank

How to use the Fill in Blank interactive element when creating content

Updated over 5 months ago

The Smart Arena platform offers a powerful Authoring Tool designed to create engaging and dynamic learning experiences. Among its standout features are the interactive elements, which enable course creators to enhance user engagement and interactivity within their content. These elements allow for creative ways to present information, assess learning progress, and encourage participation.

The Fill in Blank interactive element in Smart Arena allows course creators to engage learners by requiring them to fill in missing words or phrases, enhancing their recall and comprehension.

1. Set up the question and answers

In the Textarea section, type the question or sentence, and click Add field to create a blank space for each word or phrase you want learners to fill in.

For each blank field, enter the correct answer. You can create multiple blanks by adding more fields. Each field corresponds to a specific blank in the sentence.

When setting up answers in the Fill in Blank interactive element, it’s important to include possible variations of the correct answer and common spelling errors. This ensures that the system correctly recognizes all valid answers and doesn’t mark a response as incorrect due to minor differences in spelling or capitalization.

2. Insert blanks into the text

Once all fields are added, click Insert field into text to place each blank in the correct spot within your question text. This will automatically link each blank with its respective field in the sentence.

3. After configuring the questions and answers, click Save to add it to your assessment.

The Fill in Blank add-on is particularly useful for testing recall and understanding of key terms, phrases, or definitions in an engaging way. It forces learners to actively recall information, reinforcing memory retention, rather than simply selecting answers. This format is ideal for vocabulary exercises, filling in key technical terms, or completing sentences with contextually accurate information.
