The Smart Arena platform offers a powerful Authoring Tool designed to create engaging and dynamic learning experiences. Among its standout features are the interactive elements, which enable course creators to enhance user engagement and interactivity within their content. These elements allow for creative ways to present information, assess learning progress, and encourage participation.
The Dictation interactive element in Smart Arena is a valuable tool for language training, spelling exercises, and listening comprehension. It allows course creators to upload an audio file for learners to listen to and transcribe, making it a powerful feature for courses aimed at developing listening and writing skills.
To effectively use the Dictation interactive element in Smart Arena, content creators need to prepare a clear and high-quality audio file for learners to transcribe, ensuring it is well-paced and free of background noise.
There should also be a transcript or reference text of the audio for verification purposes. Think about providing clear instructions for learners on how to complete the activity, including guidelines for spelling, punctuation, and formatting, is essential.
How to use Dictation
First, in the authoring tool select a layout, and drag and drop the Dictation bracket, which you can find under interactive elements into your canvas.
1. Upload audio file
In the Dictation area section, click on the upload icon to add an audio file. This will be the audio dictation that learners will listen to and transcribe. Ensure the audio file is clear and at an appropriate pace for your audience.
2. Enter dictation text
In the Type dictation here field, enter the correct transcription of the audio. This text serves as the answer key against which learners' entries will be checked for accuracy.
3. Additional words
If you want to accept alternative words or spellings, use the Additional words section by clicking on Add field. Here, you can specify other acceptable words or phrases that learners might use and insert them into the text with the Insert field into text button (make sure your cursor is at the right place in the text).
4. After setting up the dictation, save your settings to add this element to the course.
The Dictation interactive element is highly beneficial for courses focused on language skills, auditory comprehension, and attention to detail. It enables learners to actively engage by listening and writing, promoting better retention and comprehension.
Example
This is how the Video Mashup interactive add-on will look to the learner. As they listen to the uploaded audio they type the dictation on the right. After clicking check the right answer will be displayed with all possible mistakes underlined and marked green.
