A practice exam is the best way for students to get comfortable using SmarterProctoring before test day. It reduces stress, builds confidence, and ensures everything works smoothly.
STEP 1: Login to Your Instructor (Course) Dashboard
Select 'New Exam' to begin setting up your SmarterProctoring exam.
STEP 2: Add Exam Details

Best Practice: Open the window 2–3 weeks in advance to ensure availability.

STEP 3: Permitted Items
Match the practice exam settings to the actual exam conditions as closely as possible to help students prepare accurately.
Allowed Materials: Indicate any items students may use during the exam (e.g., scratch paper, notes).
Other Items: List any external tools or software permitted, such as Excel or Word.
Calculator Options:
Instructors can enable one or more calculator types:
– Four-function

– Graphing
– Matrix
If a different calculator type is allowed, enter the details in the open text field under the “Calculator” option.
STEP 4: Add Notes for Students and/or Proctors
Use this section to share important instructions or reminders. These can help ensure smoother exam sessions.
Visibility Reminder:
Proctors will see both student-facing and proctor-only notes.
Students will only see the student-facing notes—they will never see notes meant for proctors.
Common Student Notes Examples:
"Hold up your scratch paper (front and back) during the room scan and after completing the exam."
"If you experience any issues, contact SmarterProctoring 24/7 Support first before reaching out to your instructor."
Tip: Keep notes short and aligned with your exam policies to avoid confusion.
STEP 5: Proctor Settings – Choose the Proctor Modality
All practice exams must use Automated Proctoring.
This allows students to access the exam on demand without scheduling.Select your Lock Down and Verification Preferences:
Choose the lockdown level and identity verification options that reflect your actual exam settings.
Tip: Use the same settings as the real exam to give students a consistent experience and reduce test-day surprises
STEP 6: Confirmation – Save and Publish Your Exam
Save and publish your practice exam once all settings are complete.
Notify your students so they can access it, get comfortable with the platform, and practice using the correct tools and environment.
Instructor Tip: After publishing, switch to student view to confirm the exam setup is correct. This helps catch any issues early and ensures a smooth experience for your students.
Encourage all students—especially first-time users—to complete the practice exam to build confidence before the real test.
