SmarterProctoring allows you to take exams remotely while maintaining academic integrity. This guide will walk you through what SmarterProctoring does and doesn't do, what to expect before, during, and after your exam, and how virtual proctoring differs from in-person testing.

What SmarterProctoring Does

  • Monitors Webcam & Screen Activity
Your webcam and screen are recorded during your exam session.

  • Performs Security Checks
You may be asked to do a room scan, show your ID, remove earbuds, and verify you're not wearing smartwatches or recordable eyewear—depending on your school’s requirements.

  • Restricts Apps with SecureSession
When enabled, SecureSession limits access to applications during your test. (Note: Chromebooks are not compatible with SecureSession.)

  • Saves Session Recordings for Review
Instructors and admins can view flagged behavior and review your recording after the exam if needed.

What SmarterProctoring Does Not Do

Monitor Outside Your Exam Session
Only your actions during the test are monitored.

Track Other Devices or Network Activity
It does not monitor your network traffic or devices not used for the exam.

Share Your Data
Your session and personal data are never sold or shared with third parties.

Send Recordings Outside Your School
Only your school’s authorized personnel have access to your exam recordings.

Privacy & Data Protection

SmarterProctoring collects only the data necessary to maintain a secure and fair testing environment. All information and recordings stay within your institution and are used solely to support academic integrity.

What to Expect

Before the Exam:

  • Check that your internet, webcam, and microphone are working.

  • Complete ID verification.

  • Do a room scan to show your environment is secure.

  • Review and show any approved testing materials.

  • Remove earbuds, smartwatches, or recordable glasses.

During the Exam:

  • Stay visible on camera at all times.

  • Your screen and webcam are monitored continuously.

  • If needed, you may get real-time alerts (e.g., to fix your camera angle).

  • Suspicious behavior may be flagged for later review.

After the Exam:

  • Your recorded session may be reviewed by your instructor or school admin.

  • If something is flagged, your school will determine if any follow-up is needed.

Acceptable Behavior During Testing

To avoid issues, make sure to:

  • Test alone in a quiet, private space.

  • Remain on camera at all times.

  • Follow all proctor instructions.

  • Dress and act respectfully and professionally.

How Virtual Proctoring Is Different from In-Person Testing

You’re responsible for your environment
Make sure your space meets your school’s requirements.

Tech replaces in-person proctors
Webcams, microphones, and software monitor your exam—not a person in the room.

Security checks are virtual
Room scans and ID checks happen through your device camera.

Request accommodations in advance
Reach out to your school if you have a disability or need a testing accommodation prior to scheduling your exam.
