SmarterProctoring includes customizable exam settings designed to support a secure and fair testing environment. The lockdown and verification options allow instructors to tailor each exam based on the desired level of security, helping maintain academic integrity in remote settings while allowing flexibility when appropriate.

How Settings Work

Each permission setting can be enabled or disabled for an individual exam:

  • Blue icon with a green check = the setting is enabled and enforced

  • Grey icon = the setting is disabled and will not apply

You can select from presets (Strict or Lenient) or customize each setting manually.

Preset Options

Lenient

This option enables a lighter security setup for low-stakes assessments or practice tests.

Strict

This preset applies the highest level of available lockdown controls (excluding SecureSession, which remains optional if your school has enabled it).

Lock Down Options Explained

Setting

Description

Force Full Screen

Forces the student into full-screen mode. While students can still switch windows (due to browser limitations), off-screen activity is flagged for review. (Strict only)

Only One Screen

Prompts the student to disconnect any external monitors. Screen recording will only capture a single screen.

Disable New Tabs

Automatically prevents students from opening new browser tabs during the exam.

Close Open Tabs (if enabled)

Closes all existing tabs when the proctoring session begins.

Disable Printing

Prevents printing of exam content. Attempting to print results in a blank output.

Disable Clipboard

Clears clipboard contents and disables copy/paste functions via mouse and keyboard shortcuts.

Disable Right Click

Blocks right-click menu access to discourage use of shortcuts or copying content.

Block Other Extensions (if enabled)

Attempts to disable known high-risk browser extensions (e.g., LastPass, 1Password) that may compromise exam integrity. Note: not all extensions can be blocked.

🧾Verification Options Explained

Setting

Description

Verify ID

Students are prompted to display a government-issued or school ID to confirm their identity.

Room Scan

Prompts the student to use their webcam to perform a 360° scan of their environment. Accuracy of the scan cannot be guaranteed and is at the student's discretion.

SecureSession Utility App (Optional)

When installed, further restricts system-level functionality. Not compatible with Chromebooks and must be installed during onboarding.

Instructor Notes

  • These settings should align with the academic stakes and integrity requirements of your exam.

  • Review and adjust settings prior to exam launch to ensure they match your expectations.

  • For high-stakes exams, consider using the Strict preset and optionally enabling SecureSession if your institution allows.

  • If your students require accommodations, adjust settings accordingly and coordinate with your disability services office. Note: To add accommodation, the student MUST be in the 'needs proctor' status.
