How to Set Up an Accommodation | SmarterServices Help Center

Instructors may need to provide accommodations to ensure that students with disabilities or unique learning needs have equitable opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge. Accommodations are not about advantage—they level the playing field.

Note: SmarterServices does not require any personal or confidential information about a student’s disability. Simply provide a clear description of the required accommodation.

📝 Common Accommodations That Require Setup

If a student requires any of the following, you’ll need to set this up in SmarterProctoring (and sometimes also in the LMS):

⏱️ Extended test time
🔁 Additional breaks
🛏️ Alternate testing location (e.g., bed, public space)
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Scribe or reader (additional person in room)
🧘 Use of calming items (fidgets, sensory tools)
💬 Non-verbal communication only (e.g., chat-only with proctor)
🖥️ Assistive technology (screen readers, speech-to-text, magnifiers)

🚦 Accommodations That Do Not Require Special Setup

These items are permitted after visual inspection and do not require entering accommodations into SmarterProctoring.

💊 Medications (emergency or over-the-counter)

Epi-Pen, Glucose Tablets, Inhaler, Insulin Pen, Nitroglycerin Tablets
Cough Drops, Eye Drops, Tissues (Kleenex)

🩼 Medical Immobilizers

Brace, Cast, Collar, Sling, Splint

🔌 Medical Devices Attached to the Body

If connected to a phone (e.g., glucose monitor), the phone must be placed behind the tester and out of reach. All other attached devices may remain in place.

Make sure the student is in “Needs Proctor” status.
If they are already scheduled, have them cancel the session, wait until accommodations are added, and reschedule.
