Creating an Exam with Automated Proctoring

Overview

There are several ways to configure an online exam with SmarterProctoring. This guide will detail how to create an exam for Automated Proctoring, and the settings available within the process.

How to Create an Exam Manually with Automated Proctoring

1. Navigate to the Course Dashboard within SmarterProctoring.

2. Click on the New Exam box in the top right corner.

3. You will want to choose Create New.

NOTE: Import Exam is only available with Canvas LMS. This option with import basic information from the LMS to create the exam.

4. On the Exam Form page, fill in the necessary fields, then click Continue.

Exam Details Explained

a. Exam Name - Choose the appropriate name to identify the exam.

b. Duration - The amount of time students will have to complete the exam once started.

c. Password/Access Code - Passwords are sent to the proctor prior to the session. Students do not have access to passwords.

d. Exam URL - The URL to the exam or the LMS log in page. If this is a pencil and paper exam, you can simply enter N/A.

e. Consecutive Attempts Allowed - The number of times a learner can attempt the exam per session. Note: Exam must allow retakes.

f. Exam Opens - The date and time the exam is set to open.

g. Exam Closes - The date and time the exam is set to close.

h. Scheduling Window - When turned on, students will only be allowed to schedule a testing session during a designated window of time. This is separate from when they will actually take the exam.

5. On the Permitted Items page, toggle selections on/off to identify items that will be permitted for the exam. All of the information on the permitted items will be displayed for the student and proctor prior to the exam.

When finished, click Continue.

Details of each field toggled ‘on’ can be added if necessary. Note: Make sure to select the appropriate calculator from the drop down.

6. On the Notes page, you can provide details for both students and proctors. When completed, click Continue.

Note: For automated proctoring sessions there is no live proctor so notes are not needed.

7. On the Proctor Settings page, you will want to enable the Automated Online Proctoring.

When choosing the Automated Proctoring settings, there are Strict and Lenient presets, but you also have the autonomy to customize settings. Clicking on the circle next to each item will enable/disable them. When settings are finalized, click Continue.

8. On the Confirmation page, review all the exam information and make corrections if needed by clicking Back. Once details of the exam are correct, click Confirm.
