How Do I Include and Exclude an Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor 2?

Alloy SmartHome’s motion sensors communicate with SmartRent’s internet-connected hub, allowing you to monitor spaces remotely via SmartRent Manager Web or SmartRent Manager Mobile. If an Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor is installed in a resident’s home, they will be able to monitor motion in the given area with the SmartRent App and the Resident Web Portal once they are moved-in. Once occupied, however, community managers and site teams will no longer be able to monitor the sensor beyond battery levels.

*Note: These steps are for the Gen 2 (PD07Z1) motion sensor only. Steps for the Gen 1 can be found here.

Including the Sensor:

Before the Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor can be used, you will first need to include it into the home’s Z-Wave network.

To include the sensor, follow these steps:

  1. Open the sensor by twisting the top half of the sensor counterclockwise

  2. Put the hub into inclusion mode (refer to our SmartRent Manager Web or Alloy Install articles for additional instructions)

  3. While the hub is in inclusion mode, press and hold the button inside the sensor until the white LED illuminates (about five seconds)

  4. The device should be discovered within a minute

    • If the device is not discovered, try excluding the device first (see steps below), then return to Step 2

  5. Once discovered, enter the device’s DSK Number (this will be the PIN or the QR Code tag inside the sensor)

Configuring the Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor 2:

Once the sensor is discovered, it will populate on the Hub page in SmartRent Manager. There are three additional steps to finalize the device installation process.

To configure the motion sensor, follow these steps:

  1. Configure the device

    • To configure the device, you’ll first need to trigger a motion event

    • Place the sensor somewhere it won’t be disturbed, such as inside a drawer or facing a wall, for one minute

    • Retrieve the sensor and wave your hand in front of it so it can detect motion and properly configure with SmartRent

    • The motion sensor should have reported its state change (switching from No Motion to Motion) completing Step 1 of the configuration automatically

    • If not, click Configure Device in SmartRent Manager, or Search for Attributes in Alloy Install

    • When configured successfully, the device’s states (Motion Binary Yes and Motion Binary No) will appear in the Device Attributes section (Alloy Install will simply proceed to the next step)

  2. Name the device

    • Choose your desired name for the device

    • Click Save and Continue in SmartRent Manager, or Name Device in Alloy Install

  3. Click Complete Installation

Excluding the Sensor:

An exclusion is a way to reset a Z-Wave device’s settings. If the Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor is not discovered during the inclusion process, it may need to be excluded. This may be necessary if the device was included in a Z-Wave network previously.

To exclude the Alloy SmartHome Motion Sensor, follow these steps:

  1. Open the sensor by twisting the top half of the sensor counterclockwise

  2. Put the hub into exclusion mode (refer to our SmartRent Manager Web or Alloy Install articles for additional instructions)

  3. While the hub is in exclusion mode, press and hold the button inside the sensor until the white LED illuminates (about five seconds)

  4. The device should be excluded within a minute

Mounting the Sensor:

Once the sensor is included into the Z-Wave network, it can be installed in its desired location using the mounting hardware included with the sensor, or by placing it in an area where it won’t be disturbed.

Here a few key tips when choosing the best location for your motion sensor:

  • Motion sensors detect motion more easily when it is moving across it rather than moving from or towards it (i.e. for doorways, this means mounting the sensor to the side of the door rather than right in front of it)

  • Do not mount the sensor near heat sources or vents as sudden changes in temperature could trigger false motion alerts

  • Do not mount the sensor by bright sources of light (such as direct sunlight or where headlights through a window are common) as light hitting the sensor directly could trigger false motion alerts
