How Do I Include and Exclude a Zlink In-Wall Dimmer?

ZLink’s in-wall dimmer communicates with SmartRent’s internet-connected hub, allowing you to monitor and remotely control the dimmer via SmartRent Manager Web or SmartRent Manager Mobile. If a ZLink In-Wall Dimmer is installed in a resident’s home, they will be able to monitor and control the dimmer within their home using SmartRent App and the Resident Web Portal once they are moved-in. Once a home is occupied, you will no longer have the ability to monitor or control the device.

Installing the In-Wall Dimmer:

Before the dimmer can be included into the system, it first needs to be wired and installed. Refer to the installation manual that came with the dimmer for proper wiring and installation instructions. Before performing any work where electricity is present, it is always recommended to consult with your local electrician. Keep in mind, a neutral wire connection is required for the dimmer to function properly.

Including the Dimmer:

Before the ZLink In-Wall Dimmer can be used, you will first need to include it into the home’s Z-Wave network.

To include the dimmer, follow these steps:

  1. Put the hub into inclusion mode (refer to our SmartRent Manager Web or Alloy Install articles for additional instructions)

  2. While the hub is in inclusion mode, turn the dimmer off and then back on by pressing the top and bottom buttons

  3. The device should be discovered within a minute

    • If the device is not discovered, try excluding the device first (see steps below), then return to Step 1

Configuring the ZLink In-Wall Dimmer:

Once the dimmer is discovered, it will populate on the Hub page in SmartRent Manager. There are three additional steps needed to finalize the device installation process.

To configure the smart dimmer, follow these steps:

  1. Configure the device

    • To configure the device, turn the dimmer on and off by pressing the top and bottom buttons

    • The smart dimmer should have reported its state change (switching from On to Off or changing levels) completing Step 1 of the configuration automatically

    • If not, click Configure Device in SmartRent Manager, or Search for Attributes in Alloy Install

    • When configured successfully, the device’s state (the brightness Level) will appear in the Device Attributes section (Alloy Install will simply proceed to the next step)

  2. Name the device

    • Choose your desired name for the device

    • Click Save and Continue in SmartRent Manager, or Name Device in Alloy Install

  3. Click Complete Installation

Excluding the Dimmer:

An exclusion is a way to reset a Z-Wave device’s settings. If the ZLink In-Wall Dimmer is not discovered during the inclusion process, it may need to be excluded. This may be necessary if the device was included in a Z-Wave network previously.

To exclude the Zlink Dimmer, follow these steps:

  1. Put the hub into exclusion mode (refer to our SmartRent Manager Web or Alloy Install articles for additional instructions)

  2. While the hub is in exclusion mode, turn the dimmer off and then back on by pressing the top and bottom buttons

  3. The device should be excluded within a minute

Using the In-Wall Dimmer:

Once properly installed and included into the Z-Wave network, you can use the dimmer as you would any other in-wall light dimmer switch. Tap the top button to turn the lights on and tap the bottom button to turn the lights off. To adjust the brightness levels of the lights, press and hold the top button to increase the brightness or press and hold the bottom button to decrease the brightness.

Additional tips for using the smart in-wall dimmer:

  • For indoor use only

  • A neutral wire connection is required

  • Only use with incandescent bulbs or dimmable CFL/LED bulbs

  • Do not use to control receptacles

  • Do not use to control personal or space heaters

  • Do not use for ceiling or exhaust fans
