What is Form 1098-C?
Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes, is a document that a charitable organization submits to the IRS when it receives a donation of a qualified vehicle with a claimed value exceeding $500. A qualified vehicle includes:
(a) Any motor vehicle primarily designed for use on public streets, roads, and highways
(b) A boat
(c) An airplane.
To report a contribution of a motor vehicle, boat, or airplane as indicated on Form 1098-C or a similar statement, follow these steps:
From the left-hand widget, search for "Deductions," then select "Go to Charity Deductions $500-$5000."
Alternatively, you can access the same page by selecting the Federal Section from the left-side widget, then navigating to Deductions > Itemized Deductions.
Next, go to Gifts to Charity > Non-Cash Donations (Over $500).
Fill in all the required information and check this box.
If you do not attach a PDF of Form 1098-C or the statement, you should mail Copy B of Form 1098-C or the statement, along with Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return, to the IRS.
To attach a PDF, navigate to Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes from the previous Gifts to Charity menu.
