Scroll down to the bottom of the income page, click on "Continue".
Next, click on "BEGIN" beside "Credits".
Then, click on the individual who was enrolled in school and is present on the 1098T.
After, click on "Yes" if client gave you a 1098T for the current tax year.
Following that, click on "Yes" or "No" depending on if box 7 is checked on the clients 1098T.
Click on "Continue".
Enter the school EIN exactly how it is found on the 1098T.
Enter the school name exactly how it is found on the 1098T.
Enter the school street address exactly how it is found on the 1098T.
Enter the zip code exactly how it is found on the 1098T for the school.
If the city does not populate accurately in the software as is shown on the address on the 1098T, edit the city to match the address on the 1098T.
Next up, click on "Continue".
Enter the amount found in Box 1 on the 1098T into the Tuition Paid box.
If there are values in box 5 for grants and scholarships, enter that amount into the "Grants and Scholarships" box. If the student has other qualified expenses that are not included in 1098T box 1 amount, then the additional amount will go into the "Other Qualified Expenses" box.
After, click on "Continue".
Confirm the tuition paid is present with the correct school information and click on "Continue".
Answer these questions specifically to each client. This is a question you will need to ask every client. If they have already claimed AOTC 4 years, they are ineligible to claim it again.
This will be indicated on box 8 of the 1098T. They must be at least part time to qualify for AOTC.
This will be indicated on Box 9 of the 1098T. If the student is a graduate student they will claim Lifetime Learning Credit not AOTC.
You will need to ask your client this question for accuracy. But if "yes", they will not qualify for AOTC.
Click "Continue".
