In this article you will find out what you need to add tracking to your shoppable or interactive video CTAs. There are two ways to add tracking to your videos, depending on the way in which your items have been added to the Smartzer platform.

Contents:

  1. Adding tracking to individual products (only with manual product add)

    • Generating tracking links

    • Adding tracking to your products

    • Testing tracking links

    • Generating tracking links

    • Connect tracking link to the end of your video player URL

    • Testing tracking links

1. Adding tracking to individual products (only with manual product add)

Please note: If you have imported products using API go to section 2 as you cannot add tracking to individual product URL's.

If you have added products using the manual add option you can add tracking which will be applied to the end of your product URLs. This will track the click through from the shoppable video to product page / landing page.

Generating tracking links

You can generate your own tracking links, for example, this could be in UTM format.

UTM codes are also known as UTM parameters, or tracking tags, because they help you "track" website traffic from its origin.

You can use a generator like the one below to create a link, choose your campaign source, medium and name to add your trackable fields. This is just a UTM tracking example but you could use other formats such as Webcat:

So the tracking link generated would be: ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=summer

Always add the tracking link using a ? and you can add more parameters using a & sign.

Adding tracking to your products

You can then add this tracking link to the end of all of your product URL's.

This will then track the click throughs from specific products that are featured in your video.

Testing your tracking

Preview your video and try clicking through to your product page via popup:

The tracking URL in the bar should appear as below:

2. Adding tracking to video player URL (when importing products via API or manual product add)

Please note: you can track click through's to product pages, however you will not be able to track add to cart clicks.

To use this method to add tracking links, either UTM or Webcat format must be used.

Generating UTM tracking links

You can generate your own tracking links by using a UTM generator such as:

Here, you can input your video URL to add tracking to the end. This will monitor traffic from the specified source.

The UTM tracking could look like this:

?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=runwayshow

2. Adding UTM tracking to your video URL

An example of a URL with UTM tracking added can be seen as below:

https://player.smartzer.com/v/5682400268910592?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=runwayshow

The information in bold shows the shoppable video URL.

To add UTM always start with ? and then connect any further tracking with &.

In this particular link you can see that the link is tracking traffic from the campaign source = facebook, campaign medium = social and campaign name = runway show.

You can also track terms and specific pieces of content within the link, make sure you add parameters using &.

3. Testing your UTM tracking

To test UTM tracking simply copy and paste your full URL including the UTM add on into your browser to check that the URL is registering a click through and passing through correctly.

Preview your video and try clicking through to your product page via popup:

The tracking URL in the bar should appear as below:
