Emergency Support & Suicide Prevention in Brazil

Written by Heidi M

Brazil — Suicide Prevention & Crisis Support

If someone is in immediate danger, call the emergency services first:

  • Police: Dial 190

  • Ambulance / Medical Emergency (SAMU): Dial 192
(These are Brazil’s standard emergency numbers.)

Suicide Prevention & Emotional Support – CVV

CVV — Centro de Valorização da Vida is Brazil’s main suicide prevention and emotional support service. It is:

  • Free

  • Confidential

  • Available 24/7

  • For anyone in distress or emotional pain

How to reach them:

  • 📞 Call or Text: 188 (free anywhere in Brazil, anytime)

  • 💬 Online chat or email through their official site (https://www.cvv.org.br)

CVV volunteers are trained to listen and support you through hard moments. You don’t have to have a diagnosis — you can call if you’re overwhelmed, feeling hopeless, lonely, stressed, or thinking about self‑harm.

Note: There are also local CVV phone numbers in many cities (e.g., São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belém, etc.), but the 188 national line works across all of Brazil and connects you to support wherever you are.

Quick Summary (Layman’s Terms):

  • In danger right now? Call 190 or 192 immediately.

  • Need someone to talk to? Call 188 — free support, day or night.

  • Confidential help: You don’t need to say your name or explain everything — just start with whatever you’re feeling.
