Maladaptive Action: Yell, lash out, hold grudges, or hurt others.
Acceptance – “This is okay, I can work with it.”
Purpose: Helps us connect and get along with others.
Adaptive Action: Cooperate, build relationships, adjust calmly.
Maladaptive Action: Passively give in, ignore problems, or let others take advantage.
Anticipation – “What’s coming next?”
Purpose: Prepares us for future challenges or opportunities.
Adaptive Action: Plan ahead, explore options, stay alert.
Maladaptive Action: Worry excessively, overthink, or become paralyzed by “what ifs.”
Joy – “This feels good!”
Purpose: Encourages behaviors that improve life and happiness.
Adaptive Action: Play, laugh, share, and repeat rewarding behaviors.
Maladaptive Action: Overindulge, chase pleasure recklessly, or ignore responsibilities.
Disgust – “Yuck! That’s harmful.”
Purpose: Protects us from things that could hurt us.
Adaptive Action: Avoid danger, harmful substances, or toxic situations.
Maladaptive Action: Be judgmental, reject people or ideas unnecessarily, or isolate oneself.
Sadness – “I lost something important.”
Purpose: Signals loss, draws support, and encourages reflection.
Adaptive Action: Slow down, seek comfort, reflect, adapt to change.
Maladaptive Action: Withdraw completely, ruminate endlessly, or give up on life.
Surprise – “Whoa, didn’t expect that!”
Purpose: Alerts us to something new or unexpected.
Adaptive Action: Pause, focus, assess, respond appropriately.
Maladaptive Action: Panic, overreact, or become stuck in confusion.
Fear – “This could be dangerous!”
Purpose: Protects us by triggering survival instincts.
Adaptive Action: Escape, hide, freeze, or defend when needed.
Maladaptive Action: Avoid all challenges, become paralyzed by worry, or develop phobias.
