SEAMAAC (Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition, Inc.) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that supports and empowers immigrants, refugees, and marginalized communities.
Founded in 1984, SEAMAAC began by helping Southeast Asian refugees resettle after the Vietnam War but has since expanded to serve people from over 40 countries.
Their mission is to build leadership, advocate for social justice, and promote access to education, health, and economic opportunities.
Key programs include:
Community Engagement & Advocacy: Civic participation, immigrant rights, and language access initiatives.
Education & Youth Programs: ESL, after-school, and college prep support for immigrant youth.
Health & Social Services: Support with healthcare access, domestic violence prevention, and food security (including their popular “Fresh Food Hub”).
Workforce Development: Job readiness and employment training for immigrants and refugees.
People who benefit from SEAMAAC are primarily:
🧭 Immigrants and Refugees – Especially from Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar) as well as African, Latin American, and other international communities now living in Philadelphia. SEAMAAC helps them adjust to life in the U.S., navigate systems, and access resources.
👩👧👦 Low-income families and individuals – Many clients face barriers like limited English proficiency, lack of healthcare, and unstable employment; SEAMAAC provides essential services like food access, housing help, and job training.
🎓 Youth and Students – Through after-school programs, mentorship, and leadership development, SEAMAAC supports immigrant youth in education and career readiness.
🧑🌾 Community members facing food insecurity – Their Fresh Food Hub delivers culturally relevant produce to underserved neighborhoods.
🌍 Marginalized and underrepresented populations – SEAMAAC advocates for social justice, voting rights, and equitable policies impacting immigrant and refugee communities.
In short, SEAMAAC benefits anyone in Philadelphia’s immigrant, refugee, and low-income communities who needs support in building stability, opportunity, and voice.
