SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a secular, science-informed recovery program that uses practical tools drawn largely from cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational psychology. Rather than following a spiritual or 12-step model, SMART focuses on helping people develop the skills to change addictive behaviors and build a life they find meaningful.
Its core 4-Point Program focuses on building and maintaining motivation, coping with urges and cravings, managing thoughts/feelings/behaviors, and creating a balanced life. SMART supports people working toward recovery from substance use as well as certain behavioral or process addictions, and meetings are available both online and in person.
