Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families (ACA)

Written by Heidi M

Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families is a Twelve Step fellowship for people who grew up in homes affected by alcoholism, dysfunction, neglect, or other difficult family experiences. Members may recognize lasting patterns involving relationships, self-esteem, emotional expression, trust, or a sense of safety. Participation does not require a parent to have had a formal alcohol use disorder diagnosis.

ACA provides a community where members can explore how childhood experiences may continue to affect their adult lives. Through meetings, recovery literature, and the Twelve Steps, members work toward greater self-understanding and healthier relationships. The fellowship emphasizes personal growth and learning new ways to respond to old patterns, with the support of others who share similar experiences.
