When you import an item, or bundle of items, worth over $1,000 into New Zealand, you will usually get an invoice from the Customs Service requiring you to pay customs duty and GST on the item/s.

Check out the Customs Service website for details on how the duty and GST is applied.

If you're GST registered you can claim the customs GST in your GST return. Customs GST needs to be added a 'credit adjustment' in your GST return, and therefore there is not an expense category for it in Solo.

To claim customs GST in your GST return:

  1. At the Purchases and expenses step in your GST return.

  2. Select Yes for credit adjustments.

  3. Enter the GST amount from your customs invoice in the Other adjustments box.

  4. Complete your GST return.
