Creating Template Plans with the Soma Analytics Plan Builder

Updated over a week ago

Template plans help you standardize your programming workflow inside Soma Analytics. By building a few core templates, you can quickly duplicate, personalize, and assign structured cognitive training programs without starting from scratch each time.

This article explains how to create, save, and load template plans using the Plan Builder.

Step 1. Create a New Template Plan

Name your template plan

Give your template a clear, descriptive name so you can easily identify it later.

Examples: 12-Session Template or 16-Session Cognitive Load Block.

Save the plan as

Select Template.

Step 2. Set Up Sessions

Add a session

Click Add Session to create a new session.

Name sessions

Use a simple naming format such as:

Baseline

Session 1

Session 2

Session 3

Set session cycles

Determine how many times each session repeats. The default is one cycle.

Add scales

Select feedback scales from the dropdown menu to capture post-task data.

  • Fatigue (RMF)

  • Effort (RME)

  • Exertion (RPE)

Activate baseline comparison (optional)

Enable Baseline Comparison to automatically generate and send pre- and post-test reports. When enabled, the cycle count is automatically set to two for accurate comparison.

Enable Minute-on-Minute mode (optional)

Turn on Minute-on-Minute (MoM) tracking for detailed data collection during sessions.

Step 3. Design the Template Plan

Once your sessions are created, you can design the training structure.

Add drills to sessions

Click Add Drill, then set parameters for each task:

  • Duration: Total task length

  • Intensity: Cognitive load level

  • Mode: Select the training mode

Repeat until all sessions are complete.

Recommended template setup

For most coaches, two base templates are ideal:

  • 12-session plan for shorter training cycles

  • 16-session plan for extended cognitive training blocks

Configuration tips

  • Apply scales to every session

  • Enable baseline comparison for the baseline session only

  • Turn on MoM for sessions where you want detailed trend analysis

Once your templates are ready, you can quickly load, personalize, and assign them to athletes. This saves time while maintaining structure and consistency.

Step 4. Save the Template Plan

Click Save Template to store your plan for future use.

When you load a template later, Soma automatically creates a duplicate so you can edit freely without affecting the original version.

To update your master template:

  1. Go to My Plans → Inactive tab.

  2. Find your template.

  3. Make edits directly.

Your changes will be reflected the next time the template is loaded.

Tip: Create empty templates (e.g., 12, 16, or 20 sessions) pre-configured with RMF, RME, RPE, MoM, and Baseline Comparison to speed up future plan creation.

How to Load a Template Plan

  1. Click Create Plan.

  2. Name your plan (e.g., “Athlete Cognitive Block 1”).

  3. Save the plan as New Plan.

  4. Select your template from the saved list.

  5. Customize the plan as needed for the athlete or group.

  6. Assign the plan once ready.

Important

Soma automatically duplicates the most recent version of your master template each time it is loaded. This ensures you can make edits freely without altering the original.

Templates cannot have users directly assigned.

This is intentional — if users were linked to a master template, edits could automatically overwrite active training data.

To protect your structure:

  • Master templates remain user-free by design.

  • When loaded, Soma creates a duplicate that can be edited safely.

  • To update a master, go to My Plans → Inactive tab, make your changes, and they’ll apply to all future duplicates.
