Lapses are a significant indicator of mental fatigue in athletes, as they measure the number of substantially delayed responses, suggesting inattentiveness. Mental fatigue may result in slower response times, increased variability, and a higher number of lapses. Thus, tracking the lapse count is crucial for assessing an athlete's mental fatigue. An uptick in lapse count serves as a warning, indicating the need for a more detailed examination of an athlete's data.

So, how are lapses calculated?

  • The Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT): A response exceeding 500ms is considered a PVT lapse.

  • The PVT-B Test: A response over 355ms is defined as a PVT-B lapse.

  • The Mackworth Clock Test: A response longer than 650ms is identified as a Mackworth lapse.
