How to Enable Microphone and Speech Recognition

Steps to grant permission for using audio features on Safari and Chrome (mobile and desktop)

Using Speakable’s audio features requires microphone and speech recognition permissions. Follow the instructions below to enable access on iOS Safari, Chrome Desktop, and Chrome Mobile.

iOS Safari: Enable Microphone and Speech Recognition

Update! In January 2025, Speakable released a native mobile application for students using iPads and iPhones. It can be downloaded from the Apple App Store.

  1. Enable Microphone Access in Safari
    Open Safari and navigate to the Speakable app or website
    Tap the "AA" icon in the address bar
    Select "Website Settings"
    Set Microphone to "Allow"
    Reload the page to apply changes

  2. Enable Speech Recognition in iOS Settings
    Open the Settings app
    Go to Privacy & Security > Speech Recognition
    Find Safari and toggle it on

  3. Test the Features
    Return to Safari and test audio recording and speech recognition in Speakable

Chrome Desktop: Enable Microphone and Speech Recognition

  1. Open Chrome and go to the Speakable app or website

  2. Click the lock icon next to the URL in the address bar

  3. Select "Site settings"

  4. Find Microphone under the Permissions section and set it to "Allow"

  5. Reload the page

Chrome Mobile: Enable Microphone and Speech Recognition

  1. Open Chrome and go to the Speakable app or website

  2. Tap the lock icon next to the URL

  3. Tap "Permissions"

  4. Set Microphone to "Allow"

  5. Reload the page

  6. Test the features to confirm microphone and speech recognition are working
