The Breath Map and Your Field State

What the Breath Map shows, what each star means, what the FIELD label on your home screen is telling you, and what happens when you share the map.

The Breath Map is a picture of your own practice over time. It is drawn from your sessions and nothing else.

Where to find it

What each star means

Every completed session becomes a star.

Angle — when the session happened
Distance from the centre — coherence
Size — how long the session was

The map also marks practice streaks at 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90 days, with trails connecting sessions on consecutive days.

Colour follows each session, not the map

A star keeps whatever the sigil it came from keeps: sessions recorded on Spiral Breath+, and sessions from the Calm demo, stay in colour permanently. Sessions recorded on Free stay grey permanently.

So on the free plan your Breath Map is usually a mix — grey stars with coloured ones wherever you practised Calm. Subscribing doesn't colour in older grey stars, and cancelling doesn't drain the colour from ones you already have. See Sigils and the Breath Map.

Sharing your Breath Map

The Share button on the Breath Map saves a picture of the map as it appears on your screen, so it keeps the same colours you can see.

This is different from a session share card, which is always full colour on both plans. If your map has grey stars, they will be grey in the shared picture too.

Older sessions

The most recent 1000 sessions appear as individual stars. Older ones move to long-term storage and appear as a general glow rather than separate points.

Nothing is deleted.

FIELD — the state shown on your home screen

Once you've completed at least three sessions, the home screen shows a short label beneath the app name, like FIELD · STEADY.

This describes the rhythm of your recent practice — chiefly how closely your timing has been tracking the exercises, and whether that's improving, holding or slipping. It is not a score, and it is not a grade.

Steady — your recent practice has been consistent
Stabilizing — your timing and consistency are improving
Settling — your timing has drifted a little, but it isn't getting worse
Finding Rhythm — your timing is holding, but consistency has been variable
Drifting — your timing has drifted and is continuing to
Scattered — both timing and consistency have been variable recently
Forming — not enough of a pattern yet to describe

Settling is not the same as Steady. It's a gentle way of saying your timing has slipped slightly while holding stable. If you're aiming for something, Steady and Stabilizing are the states that reflect consistent practice.

If you don't see a FIELD label, you have fewer than three completed sessions. It will appear on its own.

It's private

The Breath Map and your field state are calculated on your iPhone from your own sessions. They are never uploaded, never compared with other people, and never shared unless you choose to share an image.
