Note: Some of these features are only available on the Pro and Studio plans.

Sprout galleries have been designed to be simple, minimalist and elegant. They are meant to be completely intuitive for your clients to use and show off your imagery.

That being said, there are a few settings for galleries that you can tweak to match your preferences, specifically:

  • Thumbnail type

  • Theme

  • Cover theme

How to change the thumbnail type in your gallery

The thumbnail type dictates how thumbnails show up in your gallery. To change the thumbnail type for your gallery, choose an option from the "Thumbnail Style" in the "Settings" panel under the "Design" category while editing your gallery.

There are three thumbnail types for you to choose from:

  • Grid view, where all thumbnails are small squares. This is a great, clean and simple thumbnail type that shows off a large number of photos in a distraction-free manner. Here is a sample grid view:

  • Masonry view, where all thumbnails are their natural proportion, and each row of photos is stacked on top of each other like a set of bricks. This is a more dynamic thumbnail type that shows off photos naturally while still maintaining their sequence order. Here is a sample masonry view of the same set of images:

  • Waterfall view, where all thumbnails are their natural proportion (similar to masonry), but are displayed in columns instead of rows. This is a very interesting view made popular by sites like Pinterest, and is best used for sets of images where the sequence isn't as important, as sometimes the natural order isn't as obvious. Here is a sample waterfall view of the same set of images:

How to change the theme of your gallery

Currently, Sprout galleries support two different themes - a light and a dark mode. Light mode is the default option, where all background elements in your gallery are light. Dark mode is the opposite, where all background elements in your gallery are dark.

To change the theme of your gallery, choose an option from the "Theme" field in the "Settings" panel under the Design category while editing your gallery.

How to change the cover theme of your gallery

The first page your client sees when they load their gallery is the gallery cover. This is the introduction to the gallery - the "book cover" to your photos. To set your gallery cover theme, go to Settings > Design > Covers and choose from the options there. You can also make a new gallery cover from scratch here.
