What happened to the balance ticker?

Why we turned off one of our investors' favorite features

If you've been a Stairs investor, you've noticed that the "balance ticker" on the dashboard is now a static balance that corresponds to the balance in the Past tab in the app.

The balance ticker was one of our customers' favorite features. So why on earth would we turn this off?

First, the ticker was only ever meant to be a fun estimate of your balance. It wasn't supposed to represent the reality of earning money in increments of $0.000001.

Underlying Stairs is a sophisticated system of investments and repayments of rolling five-day notes. Depending on the timing of the notes payouts, sometimes the ticker would be off by a little bit. As a result, our eagle-eyed customers would notice that their ticker would drop by a little bit when its estimated value updated. Many people wrote into us asking why their balance had dropped. No money was ever lost - it was simply that the ticker's estimate would be adjusted as the five-day notes got repaid. When the timing was just right, that manifested as a balance drop, usually a small amount, but enough to be noticed.

So, we're turning the ticker off for now. We're working on some other ways to represent your growing balance that are just as fun.
