On the customer account page you can control the customer's payment method and payment type under the Billing tab and Billing Type heading.
Payment Types:
Automatic - The customer is automatically billed when the order is made Ready for Delivery.
On Account - The customer is billed when you bill the order from the Order Detail page or the Customer Account page > Orders.
