⏳ Monero (XMR) Confirmations: Why More Are Needed Now & Recent Network Risks

Network update & current status

Updated over 2 months ago

🧩 What’s Changed

Monero’s security model typically relies on block confirmations to ensure transactions are final and irreversible. Historically, about 10 confirmations (≈ 20 minutes) were considered safe. However, due to recent events, networks and liquidity providers have raised the confirmation threshold.

As of now, Monero transactions must reach at least 25 confirmations before they’re considered fully settled.

These changes respond to structural and attack-related concerns in the Monero ecosystem.

🧨 Recent Incidents & Risks

🔄 Deepest Ever Reorganization

  • On 14 September 2025, Monero’s blockchain underwent a record 18-block reorganization.

  • This rollback invalidated 118 confirmed transactions, effectively wiping ~36 minutes of transaction history.

  • The reorg was traced to Qubic, which allegedly acquired a majority of Monero’s mining power and published a longer chain that was accepted by the network nodes.

  • Such a deep reorg is unprecedented for Monero and has raised serious concerns about the chain’s stability and reliability.

🔐 Possible 51% Attack & Chain Control

  • Reports suggest Qubic controls over 50% of Monero’s hash power, enabling potential censorship, reorgs, or double-spends.

  • In August 2025, Qubic allegedly executed a 6-block reorg, rewriting part of Monero’s ledger.

  • Analysts are now warning that sustained control over hashing power places the network at risk of further manipulation.

🧠 Technical & Network Concerns

  • In parallel, research into Monero’s P2P network suggests that non-standard or anomalous nodes may exist (≈14–15% of reachable peers) — which could facilitate network-level surveillance or manipulation.

  • The topology of Monero’s peer network shows a core-periphery structure, concentrating reliability on “supernodes.” Attacks or faults targeting core nodes might influence connectivity or consensus reachability.

🔒 Why Raising Confirmations Matters

These recent events highlight how deeper chain reorganizations can undo transactions that were once considered final. By increasing required confirmations:

  • We reduce risk of double-spend or reversal, especially during network instability

  • We shield users from uncertainty when reorgs are introduced by malicious actors

  • We give time for the chain to settle and for consensus to solidify

🧭 What You Should Expect

  • XMR transactions may take longer than usual (potentially 45 minutes to an hour or more in heavy conditions)

  • If your XMR swap seems delayed, it may still be processing through the confirmation threshold

  • You don’t need to take any extra steps — StealthEX handles confirmation tracking internally

🤝 Support & Troubleshooting

If your Monero transaction appears stuck or delayed beyond expectations:

  • Share your TX hash and Exchange ID via chat (bottom-right corner) or email

  • Our team will trace it and confirm whether it’s still pending confirmations or impacted by reorgs
