Building and Managing Pathways
Updated over a year ago

Pathways are example program templates and show the recommended sequence of courses. Where the audit shows what classes are required in a ‘tree’ structure (most important first), the Pathway shows the classes in sequence (by term). Pathways can be created for one program, or with combined programs (for instance, a major and minor together).

You can use Pathways in two ways -- as an example layout for students to view, or to apply classes to a students plan.

The Pathway format is very similar to what a student will see in their ‘Planner’ view. If a student has a Pathway applied to their plan, the courses laid out in the Pathway will be automatically added to the student plan, with a ‘recommended’ tag. We won’t add courses if the student has already completed them, and students can always change or remove these recommended courses.

To create a new Pathway, you can navigate to the Pathways tab and click ‘Create New’, or click ‘Create New’ from the Pathways tab within a specific program.

You’ll choose a Pathway name and the program to apply it to. You may also choose to start from a base Pathway. This can be helpful if a similar Pathway already exists, allowing you to adjust as needed rather than creating from scratch.

To add courses to the Pathway, drag and drop from either the Tentative List or the Progress tab showing in the sidebar. If courses require a prerequisite that hasn’t been met, we’ll warn you before you add. You can still choose to add the course, and it will show with a ‘prereqs not met’ tag.

Tip: You'll only be able to drag and drop if the category or course is not already 'fulfilled' in the Pathway.

Placeholders

If multiple courses could satisfy a requirement, you can drag the entire category over as a placeholder. This will let students know they need to work on the 'Humanities, Arts, and Sciences Social Sciences' requirement (example below) in that term, but still allow them to choose the specific course. Note that if you add a placeholder, the program won’t be able to identify any pre or co-requisites contained within that placeholder.

Placeholders can only be added if the category has a constraint of 'fulfill any' -- meaning there are options of which classes to take.

You’ll be able to tell which courses are still needed for the plan if the requirements show a red number in the Progress tab, or once they have been removed from the Tentative list. The Pathway is finished once all requirements in the sidebar show a check mark in the Progress tab, or you have no remaining requirements in the tentative list. Click to refresh the sidebar in order to update the sidebar with classes that you’ve added to the Pathway.

The Tentative list will display only 'Unplanned' courses, which are courses that haven't yet been fulfilled in the Pathway. This is an easy way to see what you still need to add to the sequence.

Pathways with Multiple Programs

To add pathways with multiple programs, select the programs in the search box and add them by clicking on the program name.

Note: A Pathway with multiple programs can only be applied to a student’s plan if they have the exact same set of programs with the same audit versions as the Pathway.

Pathway Application

The following rules decide which courses from a Pathway will be applied to specific students:

  • Any course that is already in a student's plan will not be added

  • If a course is set as 'repeatable' it can be added to the student's plan multiple times. If the repeatable course has already been taken by a student, applying the Pathway will only add the remaining number of repetitions needed to complete the Pathway.

  • If a course is not set as 'repeatable', it will only be added to the student's plan once, even if it is in the Pathway multiple times.

  • A course will not be added to a student's plan if the pre-requisites are not in plan to be completed before the occurrence of the class.

  • If a Pathway is created with an extra class that is not needed for the audit, the extra class will not be added to the student plan. For example, if the audit requires either Math-101 or Math-102, and the Pathway has both classes, only one will be added to the student's plan.

  • A placeholder will not be added if the requirement has already been met in the student's plan.

Deleting a Pathway

To delete a Pathway, click 'Delete' in the top right corner of the Pathway page. If the Pathway has already been applied to students, you’ll be given the option to remove the courses and placeholders from student plans, or simply remove the ‘recommended’ tag from the courses and placeholders. Removing the 'recommended' tag will leave courses in student plans, but they will not be identifiable as being added via a Pathway. Students can still add or move these courses.

Tip: To remove Pathway courses and placeholders from all applied students' plans (without deleting the Pathway), you can delete them from the Pathway. Then click 'apply to students' again with the blank Pathway, and courses will be removed.

Users who have permission to edit a Pathway will automatically have permission to apply the Pathway to students, and delete the Pathway.
