There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to creating these zen gardens. Each participant can personalize it. You could have a variety of different items with which to decorate. The supply list below can really be tailored to whatever you're able to acquire.

We'd highly recommend Googling 'mini zen gardens' and printing off photos for inspiration!

Supplies

  • Mini zen garden rakes (you can source these from hobby craft stores or Amazon)

  • Smooth stones, shells, and/or crystals

  • Small trays

  • Air plants, moss, artificial greenery, felt

  • Figurines (animals, Buddhas, etc.) and craft paint + brushes (if wishing to color them all the same)

  • Fine sand or aquarium substrate

Instructions

  1. Spread fine sand or aquarium substrate in the tray. Keep the sand or substrate more shallow on one half and deeper on the other.

  2. Set rocks and plants on the shallow side of the sand, arranging them close together. TIP: If you want to make the elements more permanent, you can glue the plants and rocks to the tray before you add the sand or substrate then fill in the sand after they dry.

  3. Use the rake to make designs in the sand, then smooth it out and start again.
