What is e-learning?

If you visited Google.com, typed in "what is e-learning" and then select search, you may see this result below:

This electronic media could consist of files, images, text and video, but simply sharing files would not really be considered e-learning, or could it? It would depend on the structure and content. You could have a course handbook/learner study guide and a course textbook and between these two resources, a learner could learn quite a bit.

If you wanted that course handbook to be digital with additional media and then wanted to blend it with concepts from the textbook which will allow the learner to progress through different levels/stages of theory exposure, this can be done in Student Manager.

We have designed our e-learning to follow the framework of a book (i.e. Chapters and Pages), a book starts with some kind of introduction and or background you then go through different topics/chapters, with each chapter building on the exposure from the chapter before it. You then have a final chapter which would be the conclusion/summary, tying everything together.

Once a learner has been exposed to the required amount of information, you may then give them access to an assessment.

Here's an example of the maximum setup layout for e-learning

I have a course which is 5 credits, for this course:

  1. the learner should maybe have self-study time and or research time of 15 hours

  2. I should teach them for 20 hours

  3. the learner will be assessed for 15 hours (Assessment time plus the time it would take the learner to prep for assessments)

For my lectures/lessons, I have 20 hours and lets say each of my lectures/lessons is 60 minutes so I have 20 lectures/lessons:

  • Lecture 1 = Introduction

  • Lecture 2 = Part 1 of Section 1

  • Lecture 3 = Part 2 of Section 1

  • Lecture 4 = Part 1 of Section 2

  • Lecture 5 = Part 2 of Section 2

  • Lecture 6 = Section 3

  • Lecture 7 = Recap of Section 1 - 3

  • Lecture 8 = Class Test 1, for content Section 1 - 3

  • Lecture 9 = Recap of Section 1-3 and Part 1 of Section 4

  • Lecture 10 = Part 2 of Section 4

  • Lecture 11 = In class research and discussion around Section 5

  • Lecture 12 = Recap of Section 5 and Part 1 of Section 6

  • Lecture 13 = Part 2 of Section 6

  • Lecture 14 = Section 7

  • Lecture 15 = Recap of Section 1 - 7

  • Lecture 16 = Class Test 2, for section Section 4 - 7

  • Lecture 17 = Recap and Discussion of Section 4 -7 and background for Assignment due at end of the module/course

  • Lecture 18 = Section 8

  • Lecture 19 = Recap of Section 1 - 4

  • Lecture 20 = Recap of Section 1 - 8

In Student Manager, I could have the following Chapters and pages setup with related content to fit your lecture, facilitation or teaching flow:

Chapter/Lesson 1 - Lecture 1

> Page/Section 1 - Introduction

> Page/Section 2 - Overview

Chapter/Lesson 2 - Lecturer 2&3

> Page/Section 1 - Introduction

> Page/Section 2 - Concept A

> Page/Section 3 - Concept B

> Page/Section 4 - Lecture Summary/Recap

Chapter/Lesson 3 - Lecturer 4&5

(similar page setup to lecture 1)

Chapter/Lesson 4 - Lecture 6-8 (with linked online multiple-choice assessment)

> Page/Section 1 - Introduction

> Page/Section 2 - Concept A

> Page/Section 3 - Concept B

> Page/Section 3 - Summary

> Linked Online Assessment - Class Test 1 (Assessment)

Chapter/Lesson 5 - Lecture 9&10

(similar page setup to lecture 1)

Chapter/Lesson 6 - Lecture 11

(similar page setup to lecture 1)

Chapter/Lesson 7 - Lecture 12&13

(similar page setup to lecture 1)

Chapter/Lesson 8 - Lecture 14 - 16 (with linked online multiple-choice assessment)

> Page/Section 1 - Introduction

> Page/Section 2 - Concept A

> Page/Section 3 - Concept B

> Page/Section 3 - Summary

> Linked Online Assessment - Class Test 2 (Assessment)

Chapter/Lesson 9 - Lecture 17 - 18

> Page/Section 1 - Introduction

> Page/Section 2 - Concept A

> Page/Section 3 - Concept B

> Page/Section 3 - Summary

Chapter/Lesson 10 - Lecture 19 - 20 (Course Summary/Overview with linked online assignment assessment)

> Page/Section 1 - Lecture 1 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 2 - Lecturer 2&3 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 3 - Lecturer 4&5 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 4 - Lecture 6-8 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 5 - Lecture 9&10 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 6 - Lecture 11 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 7 - Lecture 12&13 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 8 - Lecture 14 - 16 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 9 - Lecture 17 - 18 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Page/Section 10 - Lecture 19 - 20 - Summary/RecapOverview

> Linked Online Assessment - Assignment (Assessment)

Here's an example of the minimum setup layout for file sharing:

So in Student Manager I could have the following Chapters and pages setup with related content to support file sharing

Chapter/Section 1 - Course Material

> Page/Section 1 - Module/Course guide

> Page/Section 2 - Study guide

> Page/Section 3 - Written Assignment guidelines

> Page/Section 4 - Plagiarism declaration

> Page/Section 5 - Lecture presentation material

N.B. once your e-learning is setup you can copy it to different groups and campuses. The linked assessments however will not go across with the e-learning, these can be copied separately and then linked. The reason for this is that not all groups may require the same resources. Also assessment dates and times may not be the same for all groups.
