App Screen Builder blocks explained

A detailed breakdown of every block in the App Screen Builder: what each does, its settings, and when to use it.

This article breaks down every block available in the App Screen Builder: what it does, the settings you can configure, and when to reach for it. For the basics of creating and publishing a screen, see the App Screen Builder overview.

You add blocks to a screen and arrange them top to bottom to build your layout. Mix and match as many as you like. You can also rename any block to keep your layout organized: open the block and edit its name.

Adding a block

the Blocks can be accessed when you are in the App Screen page and you click Add Block. This will open a pop up screen with the blocks you can choose from.

The blocks are grouped into sections to help you find the right one for the job. The groupings are a recommendation - you can use blocks for other purposes, but each was designed with its section in mind.

Showcase

Ways to feature and browse your content — heroes, spotlights, carousels, lists, and rankings.

Hero Carousel

Swipeable hero cards with a headline and call to action — the most prominent way to showcase content.

Settings: title and subtitle (both optional), a button (with a button icon - also optional), and your choice of image style, with the preview updating live as you switch styles. Choose the content type and source for what appears. Hero Carousel is also the one block that can point to a Product (your paywall / access flow) as its destination. Each item can use a custom cover image in place of the inherited content or list image; leave it unset and the card falls back to that default cover.

Note: the Hero Carousel button always appears white. A dark gradient sits over the image to keep the button readable, so it stays white and does not change with your light or dark theme. the buttons will looks slightly different in the actual iOS and Android apps, then what is seen in the preview.

Best for: the top of your home screen, where you want maximum impact.

Spotlight

Feature one high-priority item with visual emphasis.

Settings: search and select the content you want to feature; the block displays its cover image, title, and subtitle.

Best for: highlighting a flagship episode, course, or release.

Auto Carousel

A row of cards pulled from a content source — the row fills itself automatically from your content.

Settings: choose a content type and a section source, and the block pulls in your latest items from that section. Set the sort order (newest or oldest first). Give the row its own heading — the Heading field now prompts you with "Add a heading", and the Subtitle field shows "Optional subtitle".

Best for: always-fresh rows like Latest Episodes that update on their own as you publish.

Curated Carousel

A row of cards you hand-pick, in a familiar streaming-app style.

Settings: title and subtitle (both optional, shown below the row), and you choose exactly which content goes in, in the order you want. As with Hero Carousel, each card can use a custom cover image instead of the linked content, collection, or list image; if you don't set one, the card uses that default cover.

Best for: curated rows like Start Here, Fan Favorites, or a themed collection.

List

Compact, browsable links or items, displayed as a vertical list.

Settings: choose between regular and large image sizes, and set how the list displays — from 1 to 4 rows. Your audience scrolls the list within your screen.

Best for: browsable collections like series, categories, or a back catalogue or use to promote your sponsors.

Ranking

A numbered, ordered list of picks.

Settings: choose the content that appears; the block numbers each item in order.

Best for: Top 10 style rows that highlight your most popular or recommended content.

Essentials

Automatic, always-on rows that come from your app setup. These come from the original app home screen and continue to work as part of the Screen Builder.

Recently Viewed

A personalised row of what each user last opened.

It only populates once someone has opened something, so on a brand-new app — or for a member who hasn't opened anything yet — it may look empty (iOS shows a brief "no recent items" message; Android hides the block until there's something to show). This block isn't shown in the CMS preview, but it appears in your live app.

Latest

An automatic row of your newest content. It's labelled "Latest". Like Recently Viewed, it isn't shown in the CMS preview but appears in your live app.

Navigation

Automatic links to each Content Overview screen.

Navigation uses your existing content navigation setup. To change where these destinations point, edit them in your App Navigation settings. Note: App Navigation changes go live in your app immediately; unlike app screens, there's no draft stage for navigation.

Promote

Drive click-through with messages, calls to action, and visual promotion.

Promo Bar

Drive click-through with a clear call to action — a colored strip that's ideal for announcements, promotions, or pointing your audience to something important. Here are some examples of how it's used:

Settings: you can edit the title, subtitle and bar color. Alongside the preset styles (Accent, Info, Warning, and Success), you can set a custom bar color with a hex code - including your own brand color, which you'll find in your website branding settings. You can add an optional button (with its own label) and you can also link the bar to a piece of content, a list, or a section — choosing the content type (audio, video, or articles) — or link to an external URL.

Best for: time-sensitive messages and calls to action at the top of your screen.

Tip 💡 using your brand color In the live iOS and Android apps, button colors often use your brand color too. So if you set the bar to your brand color and add a button, the button can blend into the background and be hard to see. If you want a brand-colored bar, either skip the button or choose a contrasting bar color so the button stays visible.

Countdown

A countdown to a launch, event or deadline, building anticipation toward a date.

Settings: title, subtitle, and a countdown target date & time, with the countdown previewing live as you set it. You can add custom text to show once the timer expires. Add a background image (with alt text), which gets an automatic overlay to darken it for legibility, plus a button with its own label and link.

Best for: launches, live events, drops, and pre-orders.

Quotes

Testimonials, press, or member praise — display social proof, similar to the website builder's quotes block.

Settings: add an optional title, plus one or more quotes. For each quote you can add the quote text, the person's name and role (or other detail you want to include), a star rating, and an avatar image. Add several quotes and they display as a slider your audience can move through.

Best for: reviews, member testimonials, and building trust.

Image & Text

A visual paired with an optional headline and copy.

Settings: upload your image, add a title and subtitle (shown above the image) and a caption (shown below it). Add a link to make the whole image tappable, sending your audience to the destination you choose.

Best for: promo graphics, featured artwork, or a visual link through to a course, page, or product.

Text Only

Headlines and rich body copy, no image — a flexible text block for words in your own style.

Settings: a rich-text editor with formatting including headings, text color, alignment, bullet points, numbering, and tappable hyperlinks.

Best for: a welcome message, an about section, or any custom copy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rename a block?

Yes. Open any block and edit its name — handy for keeping a long screen organized. The name is just for your own layout; it doesn't change anything your audience sees.

Can I reorder or remove blocks?

Yes. Blocks stack top to bottom in the order you add them, and you can rearrange or delete them at any time while editing the screen.

Why is my Recently Viewed or Latest block empty in the preview?

These two blocks don't render in the CMS preview — they only appear in your live app. Recently Viewed also stays empty until a member has opened some content, so a brand-new app (or a brand-new member) won't see anything in it yet.

Why does my Hero Carousel button look different in the app than in the preview?

Buttons render slightly differently in the live iOS and Android apps than in the CMS preview. The Hero Carousel button is always white, sitting on a dark gradient over the image so it stays readable — it doesn't switch with your light or dark theme.

I set my Promo Bar to my brand color and the button vanished — what happened?

In the live apps, button colors often use your brand color too, so a bar set to your brand color can leave the button blending into the background. If you want a brand-colored bar, either skip the button or choose a contrasting bar color so the button stays visible.

Which block can link to my paywall or a Product?

Hero Carousel, Promo bar and Text & Image are currently the only blocks that can point to a Product (your paywall / access flow).

What's the difference between Curated Carousel and Auto Carousel?

A Curated Carousel is hand-picked — you choose exactly which items appear and the order they're in. An Auto Carousel fills itself from a content source and refreshes on its own as you publish, using a sort order you set (newest or oldest first).

How do I change the heading on my Auto Carousel?

Type your own heading in the Heading field — it prompts you with "Add a heading". There's an Optional subtitle field below it if you want a second line.

Do I need to publish changes to my App Navigation?

No. Unlike app screens, App Navigation has no draft stage — changes go live in your app immediately. You edit navigation destinations in your App Navigation settings.
