How to Keep my Supporters Engaged

Getting the Most out of Your Registry Over Time

Written by Morgan Lopes

Launching your support registry is a big moment.

You’ve shared your story, invited people in, and created a space for support. What comes next is just as important: staying connected through updates.

Updates aren’t about big announcements or perfectly written posts. They’re about letting people walk alongside you in small, real, human ways. They also help answer well-intentioned (but often repeated) questions before they’re asked.

Below are three simple things to know:

- When to post updates
- What to write about
- How to help more people see them

1. “When should I start posting updates?”

Here’s what we recommend:

- Post your first update the day after your registry launches.
- For the next 2-3 weeks, post every other day.
- After that, aim for one update a week for the next few weeks.

This rhythm helps supporters feel connected early on (when engagement is highest) before settling into something more sustainable.

That said - this is your journey. You can certainly post more often, less often, pause, or pick back up whenever you need to.

2. “What should I say in my updates?”

Updates don’t need to be long, polished, or profound.

Think of them as quick touchpoints - a few sentences, ideally a photo, sharing a moment from your reality. These small check-ins help supporters feel close to you and remind them why they showed up. They can also motivate people to write words of support, donate, or volunteer.

Here are four types of updates that work well.

Gratitude - Thank people for being there.

- “Feeling so grateful for everyone who’s shared, donated, or sent kind messages. Thank you!”
- “Your support today meant more than I can say.”

Small Progress - Share a step forward, no matter how small.

- An appointment or procedure scheduled
- A form or application submitted
- A small win or sign of momentum

These updates show supporters that their help is making a difference.

Hard Day / Good Day - Offer a glimpse into your daily reality.

- A tough day and how you’re feeling
- A good day that brought some relief
- Something ordinary that reflects life right now

You don’t have to explain everything - honesty builds connection and trust.

Clarification - Answer a question or explain the “why.”

- A common question you’ve been getting
- How funds are being used
- Why this support matters at this moment

These updates help supporters feel informed and confident in how they’re showing up for you.

3. “How do I help more people see my update?”

Each time you post an update, an automated email goes out to everyone following your registry, letting them know there’s something new and inviting them to leave words of support or take action.

To reach new supporters, we recommend sharing your update link on social media. This invites friends, family, and community members to follow along.

There’s no “perfect” way to write updates. Short is fine. Messy is fine. Skipping a day (or a week) is fine.

What matters most is letting people stay connected to you - your reality, your progress, and your gratitude.
