NAICS Codes in Surfe Search

NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) is the official industry classification used across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It provides a standardized and hierarchical way to categorize businesses by their economic activity.

Surfe now classifies companies using NAICS codes, in addition to the previous industry labels.

This means you can now search and filter companies using:

  • Industry names (e.g. “Retail”, “Healthcare”)

  • NAICS codes (e.g. “441110” for New Car Dealers)

Why it matters

  • 🎯 More precise targeting: Filter companies at different levels—from broad sectors to very specific industries

  • 🌍 Standardized data: NAICS is a widely recognised, government-backed classification system

  • 🔍 Better search relevance: Results are ranked and structured based on a clear hierarchy

How it works

When searching in Surfe:

  • Enter an industry name → Surfe matches it to the closest NAICS categories

  • Enter a NAICS code → Surfe returns companies within that exact classification

Each result includes a breadcrumb view showing the full hierarchy, for example:

Retail Trade > Motor Vehicle Dealers > New Car Dealers

Do I need to know NAICS codes?

Not at all!

You can continue using plain-language searches like before. NAICS codes are simply an additional option for users who want more precise targeting.
