What you can customize

For a new set of six expressive synthetic avatars you can customize:

  • Outfits: Dress avatars in industry-specific or branded clothing by describing the look you want.

  • Backgrounds: Create custom environments like a lab, office, or factory floor using text prompts.

  • B-roll: Generate short, AI-created clips of avatars performing actions like waving, walking, or dancing to enhance storytelling.

💡 Not sure when to customize outfits and backgrounds?

Our article Make your Synthesia videos more engaging with custom avatar outfits and backgrounds explains when and why customization makes the biggest impact.

Customize an Avatar’s outfit

  1. In the video editor, select Avatars.

  2. Click Create outfit in the top-right of the picker.

  3. Enter a text prompt

    • Example: “blue overalls with safety vest”

  4. To add branding (optional):

    • Use the logo picker to choose a logo from your Brand Kit or Library, or upload a new one.

    • Optionally include logo placement in your prompt (e.g., “with logo on chest”).

    • Specify brand colors using hex codes (e.g., #0057B7) and describe which garments they should apply to.

  5. Select your preferred Avatar from the drop down options.

  6. Click Create. Generation can take a few minutes.

  7. You will be notified when the outfit is ready.

  8. You can apply your generated outfit directly to your video and add to your favorites for future use.

💡 Very detailed logos or logos with small text may render imperfectly. Consider using a simplified version (e.g., just the icon) for better results.

Customize backgrounds

  1. In the video editor, add a customizable Avatar to your video and click the Spaces option in the inspector panel.

  2. Click Create space in the bottom-left of the picker.

  3. Enter a text prompt describing the space or hit tab to auto generate a prompt based on your video script.

    • Example: “modern office with large windows”

  4. Add branding (optional):

    • Use the logo picker to choose a logo from your Brand Kit or Library, or upload a new one.

    • Include brand colors by hex code in your prompt and describe how you want them applied.

  5. Click Create. It will take a few minutes to create your custom space.

  6. You will be notified when the Space is ready. You can apply your generated Space directly and add to your favorites for future use.

Once you've created custom Spaces and Avatar looks, you can mix and match them — using any outfit with any background.

✍️ Once you’ve created custom outfits and spaces, you can use them to build videos in Synthesia — or take things further by generating B-roll footage that showcases your personalized avatars in action.

Create Avatar B-roll

  1. In your video project, select Media at the top of the page.

  2. Under the Create with AI tab, you’ll see the avatar and space currently used in your video.

  3. Enter a text prompt describing the action you want the avatar to perform — or press Tab to auto-generate one from your video script.

  4. Select the AI model you’d like to use for rendering.

  5. Click the blue arrow to generate your clip. This will consume credits and render your Avatar B-roll.
