Why do I need to sign a transaction?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

When you use Synthetix, you’ll often see your wallet ask you to sign something. This is how your wallet confirms that it’s really you taking an action.

Two Types of Signatures

  1. Message signature

    • Proves your identity to the app.

    • Doesn’t move any funds.

    • Doesn’t cost gas.

  2. Transaction signature

    • Confirms actions on the blockchain (like staking SNX or opening a trade).

    • Can move funds.

    • Requires gas (paid in ETH).

Why It’s Needed

  • To connect your wallet securely.

  • To approve trading, staking, or liquidity actions.

  • To prevent unauthorised access, only you can sign with your wallet.

⚠️ Always check the details before signing. If the request comes from the official Synthetix platform, it’s safe. Never sign random requests from unknown sites.
