Many homes have a central room thermostat that controls the heating for the whole house. The central thermostat can be wired or wireless.

In these setups, tado° replaces the central thermostat, to control the boiler. You can also add tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats to allow for heating control in individual rooms.

You can control these heating systems with one of the following setups:

1. tado° controls the boiler, and Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed in all commonly used rooms (recommended)

All rooms are controlled individually. If there is a call for heat in any room, tado° will turn on the boiler. The Smart Thermostat/Wireless Temperature Sensor measures the temperature for the Smart Radiator Thermostat in the same room.

Note: any rooms without Smart Radiator Thermostats will receive heat when the boiler is turned on. So, we recommend that you set any conventional radiator thermostats to frost protection and only turn them up when the room is in use.

You’ll need the following tado° devices:

For setup A (with wired central thermostat):

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Smart Thermostat and Internet Bridge)

  • Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for every room

For setup B (with wireless central thermostat):

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wireless Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Wireless Temperature Sensor, Wireless Receiver, and Internet Bridge)

  • Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for every room

2. A Wired Smart Thermostat controls the boiler

The complete house is heated based on the temperature measured by the Smart Thermostat.

All rooms get heated when tado° turns on the boiler. The conventional radiator thermostats in all commonly used rooms should be set to the highest level (e.g. 5 of 5). In less-used rooms, the setting should be set to a medium level to match the heat demand.

You’ll need the following tado° devices:

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Smart Thermostat and Internet Bridge)

3. A Wireless Temperature Sensor controls the boiler with a Wireless Receiver

The tado° Wireless Receiver is wired to the boiler and controls the heating based on the temperature measured by the Wireless Temperature Sensor.

All rooms get heated when tado° turns on the boiler. The conventional radiator thermostats in all commonly used rooms should be set to the highest level (e.g. 5 of 5). In less-used rooms, the setting should be at a medium level to match the lower heat demand.

You’ll need the following tado° devices:

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wireless Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Wireless Temperature Sensor, Wireless Receiver, and Internet Bridge)

4. tado° controls the boiler, and Smart Radiator Thermostats are installed in some rooms, but not in the room with the Smart Thermostat/Wireless Temperature Sensor

tado° will turn on the boiler if there is a call for heat in any room with a Smart Radiator Thermostat or in the room with the Smart Thermostat/Wireless Temperature Sensor.

Note: the room with the Wired Smart Thermostat/Wireless Temperature Sensor will receive heat whenever the boiler is turned on. This room can get warmer than the temperature set on the Smart Thermostat itself because there is no Smart Radiator Thermostat installed.

You’ll need the following tado° devices:

For setup A (with wired central thermostat):

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Smart Thermostat and Internet Bridge)

  • Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for some rooms

For setup B (with wireless central thermostat):

  • 1x Starter Kit - Wireless Smart Thermostat V3+ (includes Wireless Temperature Sensor, Wireless Receiver, and Internet Bridge)

  • Add-on - Smart Radiator Thermostats for some rooms
