Employers can end an ICHRA at the end of the current plan year or terminate their Take Command service, but employees must continue or cancel their individual health insurance directly with their insurance carrier.

How do I end my ICHRA?

Employers may end their ICHRA by:

  1. Choosing not to renew the plan for the next plan year.

  2. Requesting cancellation of their Take Command service. A self-service cancellation option may be available in the portal under Plan & Billing or Settings. If it is not visible, contact Customer Experience to obtain the cancellation request form.

  3. Completing any remaining reimbursement obligations before the cancellation date.

Your HRA remains active until the effective termination date.

How do I submit a cancellation request?

Cancellation can be submitted in one of two ways:

  • Self-service: Look for a cancellation option in the portal under Plan & Billing or Settings.

  • Via Customer Experience: If the self-service option is not available, contact Customer Experience to request the cancellation form. Cancellation is processed once the form is received and confirmed.

Cancellation is effective at the end of the current plan year unless a mid-year termination date is requested and confirmed by Customer Experience.

What happens to employees' health insurance?

Ending your ICHRA does not automatically cancel employees' health insurance.

Employees may:

  • Continue their individual insurance and pay premiums directly to the insurance carrier.

  • Cancel their individual policy by contacting the insurance carrier.

Take Command does not cancel insurance policies on behalf of employees.

If employees receive renewal notices directly from their insurance carrier, those communications come from the carrier — not from Take Command. Ending the ICHRA does not stop carrier-sent renewal notices or prevent individual policies from auto-renewing. Employees who want to cancel their individual coverage must contact their carrier directly.

What happens to reimbursements?

Approved reimbursements remain the employer's responsibility through the effective termination date.

After the plan ends:

  • Employees cannot submit new reimbursement requests for future coverage periods.

  • No additional HRA reimbursements are available unless the employer establishes a new HRA.

  • Take Command service fees stop accruing on the effective cancellation date. Any charges already due before the cancellation was processed remain payable.

What should employers do before canceling?

Before your plan ends:

  1. Download reimbursement reports.

  2. Download any compliance reports needed for your records.

  3. Save copies of documents you may need after portal access ends.

  4. Complete any outstanding reimbursement obligations.

Portal access is typically removed shortly after cancellation is complete and cannot be restored afterward. Download all reports and documents before submitting your cancellation request — do not wait until after cancellation is confirmed.

What if an employee never completed enrollment?

No action is required for employees who never completed onboarding or activated their HRA account.

When does this article not apply?

This article applies only to employers ending an ICHRA.

It does not apply to employees who want to cancel their personal health insurance policy.

Key takeaway

Ending an ICHRA ends future employer reimbursements but does not cancel employees' individual health insurance. Employers should download important reports before cancellation and complete all reimbursement obligations through the plan's termination date.
