This article is for employees enrolled in health insurance through Take Command Health’s HRA Hub (ICHRA or QSEHRA) who are selecting or using an individual health insurance plan.

No, you do not need a primary care physician (PCP) for most health insurance plans used with ICHRA or QSEHRA, although some HMO or POS plans may require one.

Do you need a primary care physician?

In most cases, no PCP is required.

Most individual health insurance plans used with ICHRA and QSEHRA do not require you to select a primary care physician.

This is especially true for:

  • PPO plans

  • EPO plans

With these plans:

  • You can see specialists without a referral

  • You do not need to designate a PCP in advance

  • You can choose providers freely within your network rules

Some plans DO require a PCP

Certain plan types may require you to choose a primary care physician, including:

  • HMO plans

  • Some POS (Point of Service) plans

If your plan requires a PCP:

  • You must select one during enrollment

  • The PCP usually coordinates your care

  • You may need referrals to see specialists
