TRICARE: What to upload for proof of coverage

This article is for employees enrolled in QSEHRA or ICHRA through Take Command who are using TRICARE as their health insurance and need to submit proof of coverage.

Written by Support

If you are covered by TRICARE, you must upload an official eligibility or coverage document from DEERS/milConnect (or equivalent TRICARE-issued proof) that shows your current active coverage and your name to verify Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) for HRA reimbursement eligibility.

What counts as valid TRICARE proof of coverage?

To verify TRICARE coverage, Take Command must be able to confirm:

  • Your name is listed as a covered individual

  • Your TRICARE plan type is active (e.g., Prime, Select, Reserve Select, or For Life)

  • Coverage is current and effective at the time of submission

You must upload one of the following official documents.

What documents can I upload for TRICARE coverage?

You can submit any of the following:

1. TRICARE Proof of Coverage / Eligibility letter (preferred)

  • Downloaded from milConnect (DEERS system)

  • Shows active TRICARE eligibility

  • Includes coverage details for you and dependents (if applicable)

2. Military or Uniformed Services ID card

  • Must clearly show your name

  • Used as proof of TRICARE eligibility

  • May need to be paired with additional documentation if coverage details are required

3. TRICARE coverage documentation (alternate options)

If a letter is not available, you can also submit:

  • TRICARE enrollment confirmation or eligibility statement

  • Screenshot from your milConnect account showing active coverage

  • Official correspondence from TRICARE confirming enrollment

  • DEERS coverage summary showing current eligibility

What must be included in your document?

Your submission must show all of the following:

  • Your full name (or covered dependent status under the sponsor)

  • Evidence of active TRICARE coverage

  • Current or effective coverage date

  • Plan type (if listed, such as Prime, Select, or Reserve Select)

If one document does not include all details, you may submit multiple documents together.

How do I get a TRICARE proof of coverage letter?

Most members can obtain proof of coverage through DEERS:

  1. Log in to milConnect

  2. Navigate to Correspondence / Documentation

  3. Select Proof of Coverage / eCorrespondence

  4. Download your eligibility letter as a PDF

  5. Save and upload it to your HRA portal

The letter reflects your current TRICARE eligibility at the time it is generated.

What if I only have a TRICARE ID card?

You can still upload your ID card, but:

  • It must clearly show your name

  • It may need to be paired with a recent eligibility letter or portal screenshot

  • It alone may not confirm premium amounts (if required for reimbursement claims)

When is proof of coverage required?

You must submit proof of TRICARE coverage:

  • During onboarding into your HRA

  • During scheduled compliance reviews (quarterly or annually)

  • When your coverage changes

  • When submitting premium reimbursement claims (if required)

What happens if my document is not accepted?

Your submission may be rejected if:

  • The document does not show current active coverage

  • Your name is missing or unclear

  • The document is outdated or not from an official source

  • Coverage type cannot be verified

If rejected, you will need to resubmit updated or supplemental documentation.

Does TRICARE always qualify for HRA reimbursement?

Yes. TRICARE generally qualifies as Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC), which satisfies HRA eligibility requirements. However:

  • You must still submit valid proof of active coverage

  • Only eligible expenses under your HRA can be reimbursed

  • Documentation must be current and verifiable
